Jameson 7 months old!

Starting a Vegan Journey...

WOW... its benn over a year now that I have started this journey in my life. It started in January 2010 deciding the safest most natural way to bring my baby in to this world would be a Home Birth to now April 2011 deciding after going through many other life changing descions that now Veganism will be the next healthiest lifestyle change for myself and my family. If someone told me two years ago that I would make all these changes in my life I would have told them they were crazy! I have explained before my reasoning for all of my choices I have made in the past on my blog, so I figured the best thing would be to explain my hcoice for the decison I have made to become Vegan.

First the problem... As I have said before Cecelia (my oldest) has Gastroperisis. This is a digestive problem in her stomach. She has been vomitting in her mouth since she was 12 months old (when she started eating solid food). After many doctor appointments we realized a diet change would be best for her, but after months of reducing her meals, allowing her to eat more frequently, cutting certain things out of her diet, and allthough we seen improvement she was still vomitting then she recently had an episode where she vommited a large amount all over the car on the way to the park. My middle child Josslin is a veggie eater all ready and a picky eater at that. We have noticed that she would not eat the protein that we were offereing her or really anything besides her veggies, which left us concerned she was not recieveing all the vitamins that would be important for her to have. Then my Husband... he eats more garbage than a teenage boy! He will sometimes go all day without eating and then have either a plate full of hot dogs, mixing size bowl of chocalate ceral, or a mixing bowl size of mac and cheese with hot dogs before bed! That leaves Me... I have always had a problem with my wait and eating healthy. Eating healthy was just something I never really learned how to do. With my first 2 pregnancies I gained 100 pounds! I kept most of the weight on until my middle child was 18 months old then I put myself on a strict diet that consisted on me eating every two hours snacks to get me through to the next two hours. I did not know anything about vitamins or what was important for me to eat all I worried about was losing the weight. I then lost 55 pound in 5 months. Which was great, but not healthy. So with Jameson I gained about 50 pounds, which I was thrilled with! Here I am now Jameson is almost 7 months old and I still haven't lost the baby weight.

I decided to really pay attention to what was in my food and what my body needed. I am still breastfeeding so I need to make sure that I am eating right so Jameson gets what he needs. Thats when I decided to read up more on Vegan and Vegiatariam diets. I am still learning, but after testing it out for a week we have seen huge results! Cecelia has not thrown up, and she is having regular bowel movements which is very strange for someone with Gastroperisis. Josslin is eating everything on her plate! Walter is cranky, but has lost a few pounds and he says the food isn't that bad but he misses his hot dogs. And me... I have lost 5 pounds in one week!

I will be posting more websites to help explain the diet and I will also be keeping you posted on how our fmaily is doing with the diet. Here are a few websites for you to view...

First Breastfeeding Complications

Back in I beleive November I did have an infection in my breast that caused a high fever and a trip to the ER, but somehow this is even more difficult than that. It started out with Jameson having Thrush mouth about a week ago. I called the doctor right away and got a perscription for his mouth. I didn't feel I had a yeast infection on my breast at that time, so I asked do I need to be treated??? The doctor is the same doctor that has made mistajes before and he says "No, you should be fine!" I should have known better than that! So a few days went by and I noticed I had a Vaginal Yeast Infection, starting to panic I quickly got a ove the counter Yeast Infection medicine. At this time Jameson mouth seemed to clear up, but then the sleepless nights started to follow. He was up every night on the hour! He went from my wonderful sleeping baby up only twice a night to a baby that was up every hour! I noticed he had lots of gas and just seemed so uncomfortable. He seemed hungry, but would barely want to eat. I was so confused. The days didn't seem to be better. My Vaginal Yeast Infection at this point made it miserable to walk and I could barely bare to sit up to breast feed him at night, the medicine was not making it any better!

So I decided to take Jameson to the doctor to have his thrush mouth taken a look at, by my now favorite doctor Dr. Jillian Shaffeild. She said he looked great and she didn't see any Thrush! But he could have it in his esaphagus. She ordered a heavy dose of an Antifungal medicine. I told her my problem and she recommended GENTIAN VIOLET. This has also been recommended by many people online and my midwife. She also warned me of the mess that it leaves behind!

Another day went by, with more sleepless nights. At this point the Yeast Infection had taken over Jamesons rolls in his legs, his esaphugus, my nipples, my vagina, a strange spot on my palm, and I am pretty sure my eyes but I am not sure if the burning is just from the lack of sleep! So I had enough! I went to Susan's Natural World looking for the Gentian Violet, but it was not their. I instead got caprylic acid pills to help with the Yeast. These are capsils you swallow. I also got Jameson a Probiotic for babies and children that can be put in his bottle. I made one more stop looking for the Gentian Violet before I decided to try Walgreens. I asked the Pharmist and he ascted like I was crazy! He said that stuff has been used since 1920s! I asked him if he knew anything else I can use that is over the counter and safe for Jameson to still breastfeed and he shrugged his shoulders and walked away! I asked do you have it??? And he said no! Then a lady from the back overheard the converstion and pulled it off the shelf and said to the Pharmisit "Is this what you are looking for???" Aprently someone special ordered it a long time ago, but never came back to buy it. He looked at the bottle and said "Well how much is it?" They went in the corner and whispered for a minute, the lady came back rung it up and said "$2.12" I started laughing! She said the bottle cost the pharmact $22.00, but no one wants it! I said "WEll I am desperate!" She said "thats fine just don't tell anyone where you got it and don't tell them to come here because we don't carry it" I about died laughing out of the store...

Little did I know the joke was on me when I got home and stained my entire bath and body purple!!! I have a feeling this will work and if I not, well back to the drawing board. Through this whole mess Jameson had to have his first bottle of formula :( I decided to use Soy Formula that is for Gass and Fussiness. I hope to not have to use it too much and he is only getting maybe 8 oz. a day of formula. I have been pumping so Jameson dosen't have to get the die all over him, but he really wanted to be breastfed to sleep tonight and the pedicatrician said it was fine and that is wouldn't hurt him.

Soooo.... I wanted to post some pics of what Jameson looks like, this isn't him because he is asleep but to make me feel better its not uncommon to have a baby with a purple mouth! :)

5 month old Baby Jameson

I know it has been awhile since I talked about how bbay Jameson is growing. He is still the sweetest, happy little baby! I have heard the babies with a quiet birth tend to be good babies, quiet birth is another word for home birth or natural birth. I have been so blessed to have such a wonderful baby. He has not caused any stress in my life.

Jameson got his first bad cold a couple weeks ago. I was pretty upset... why? Well because when everyone in the Playroom got sick I moved Jameson up stairs so he wouldn't get sick, then I actually had a parent confront me on why I moved him out of the Playroom and I expected her to leave her daughter in the Playroom, might I add her daughter was one that was sick and her daughter is 2! So I felt guilty brought him down and sure enough he got sick. I am pretty upest with myself that I allowed him to get sick even though it was most likely going to get to get to him some way or another. A few days after he got it, he really scatred me because he was having difficulty breathing. I took him to Children;s emergency room and they sucked out his nose, said he was , well fed, and he would be better in a few days. OH! They also wanted me to take a unneccesary urine sample (which would mean he would have to be cathiderized) They said infants with viruses tend to have bladder infections (5% of children) I was like OMG nope that is not going to happen... I will come back if I think he has one.

Ok so Jameson is growing awesome. He has never had a diaper rash, ear infection, craddle cap, or anything for that matter! I am so happy he is so healthy! I did decline all of his immunizations for now. We have decided to wait until he is 12 months old. I had to sign papers saying I am decline all the shots. It seemed like I was signing everyones life away. I know this is the best thing for him. I am finding it really hard to find anything good on the Hep B vaccine. But he can not attend public school without it. I did find papers that I could sign dismissing him from it, but I believe it is still up to the school to accept it. Soooo...

I will be attending the Midwest Home school Conference at the end of nexy month. I have not made up my mind for sure about this, but after having cecelia's school conference (age 4) and her teacher telling me she talks to much in class and does not finish her work... I decided I need to have Home School as a choice.

Jameson started sitting up yesturday. We left him for th first time with Aunt Maddie over night. He did awesome... well better than me :( He had fun and I was there at 7:30 in the morning. He still loves the bath and now he has learned to splash. He did get a tad bit of thresh mouth, but it was quickly cleared up in one day. He loves playing with his Sister. Cecelia can get him to laugh so hard!

I am so blessed to have this wonderful son, that looks more like his Daddy everyday! I am still breastfeeding succesfully. It is time consuming, but well worth it!

IMMUNIZATIONS

I have been very concerned the older Jameson gets about him not recieving his Immunizations. I still beleive it is our choice and we have decided to not do any shots until he is a year old. I also have decided we will not do all shots that are required.

It scares me to think if my son does not receive an injection of a shot that he will not have the chance to go to public school, play sports, or may not even be able to get certain jobs!

I have been researching our rights because it just dosent seem constitutional and I found exactly what I was looking for!! This website provides forms that can be used to protect our beliefs and Jameson's rights!

Homemade Baby Cereal!

WOW! What a new experiance! We have decided to make Jameson's baby cereal and even though he just turned 4 months old we decided to start the process of making the food, knowing I can't cook worth a diddley so this may take a few tries :)

We bought a new food processor and decided to go with Organic Jasmine Brown Rice, but apparently it would have been better to get short rice insted of long rice. It made it very difficult to grind. It was way more time consuming to blend than what I though, but it was WELL worth it :)

This is how...

Ingredients:

1/4 c. rice powder (brown rice ground in blender or food processor)
1 cup water

Directions:

1. Bring liquid to boil in saucepan. Add the rice powder while stirring constantly.
2. Simmer for 10 minutes, whisking constantly, mix in formula or breast milk and fruits if desired
3. Serve warm.

(I found that starting out you should cook only 1/8 of the cereal and also add cold wateer to the cereal after its cooked to make sure its the thickness right for your baby.)

I soooo wish I had a pic of Jameson's face when we fed him! It wasn't a big hit, but better luck next time!

Omega 3, Fish Oil

A part of having a Home Birth I have learned so much more about natural alternitives to medicine! This past year not only have we welcomed Jameson into this world, but we have had situations with Josslin and Cecelia we had to take care of too. Jossslin started losing her hair in July. She went through many test at Cincinnati Children's Hospital, only to find out almost 6 months later that it was caused by 2, 105.5 fevers she got last Spring. Cecelia has also gone through a variety of test at Children's because she is going on her 3rd year of chronic acid reflex. In addition to the Acid Reflex Cecelia had her first teacher conference this year and we have came to the conclusion that Cecelia may have symptoms of ADD.

The doctor's solutions were?... Josslin would eventually grow hair back. Cecelia would need to change her diet and as far as the ADD goes, we would have to put her on ritalin when she turned 5!

Of corse that wasn't a good enough answer for me, so I found a solution! OMEGA 3, FISH OIL! The pediatrician even said that it would strengthen and thicken Josslin's hair, it would help with Cecelia's acid reflex, and it has been proven to help children with ADD.

They have Children's Gummy Omega 3 Fish Oil Vitamins, the kids loved them! So we started it yesturday and I will let you know the results!
